Spanish, the 2 nd most spoken native language in the world with approximately 475 million native speakers, is an official language in 21 countries and territories, including the United States, where Spanish is one of the official languages of Puerto Rico. Moreover, according to the Instituto Cervantes , the United States ranks 2 nd behind Mexico in the number of Spanish speakers. Similarly, Portuguese, the official language in 9 nations, is spoken by approximately 258 million people over the world (the 6 th most spoken language). Fluency in more than one language and a deep understanding of literary and cultural texts create educated citizens who can contribute to the betterment of our society.

In the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, we help students to hone their oral and wrtten skills in important global languages and enhance their critical understanding of the world today. According to the Ethnologue , as of 2022, Spanish is the 4 th most widely spoken language in the world with approximately 548 million speakers, and 2 nd in number of native speakers, with approximately 475 million native speakers. Spanish is an official language in 21 countries and territories, counting the United States where Spanish is 1 of the official languages in Puerto Rico. In the United States, there are approximately 58 million Spanish speakers, including 42 million native speakers, 8 million Spanish learners, and 8 million undocumented Spanish speakers.

Portuguese is the official language of 9 countries. It is 1 of the official languages of the European Union and it is also an official language in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. In 1958, it was declared 1 of the 6 critical languages by the National Defense Education Act. Within the U.S., it is spoken in the Portuguese, Brazilian, and Cape Verdean communities in states like Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Iowa, and Kansas.
