This course draws on materials from multiple disciplines in the humanities including literature, history, philosophy, and cultural studies, to examine how belonging or not belonging to a state shapes the human experience. Literary texts, theoretical reflections, and historical studies on the subject of mass migration in Europe in the middle of the 20th-century will prepare for discussions of contemporary statelessness as well as responses to the refugee condition in a global context.
