English majors are encouraged to take a 200-level English course before beginning 300+ level English courses.

English majors must choose courses from each of the following 7 categories: Individual Authors or Movements, Literary Theory, English Language or Rhetoric, Transcultural Approaches to Language, Literature, or Writing, Writing, Forms and Genres, and Literary History (2 courses). In addition to the courses taken for the Literary Theory category, one additional course focusing on literature before 1850, must be taken.

One course (3 hours) in addition to Literary History (2 courses) must focus on literature before 1850.

A total of 12 hours in Rhetoric, Language, and Writing courses are required for students pursuing in the Rhetoric, Language, and Writing track. 3 of the 12 credits will be fulfilled when completing the Rhetoric or Writing category. Three additional rhetoric, language, or writing courses may be chosen from other categories as appropriate.

Only one Creative Writing Workshop class is allowed to count toward the major.

Please note that the Bachelor of General Studies degree requires completion of a single BGS major AND a secondary field of academic study (a second major, co-major, or minor). This sample plan is based on the completion of a minor. If a second major is selected instead, elective hours on plan will be needed for these additional major requirements.

Two ENGL 500+ level courses are required by the major. Attempt to choose at least one of the ENGL 500+ level courses from the list of approved Goal 6 courses for the KU Core.

Please note:

All students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are required to complete 120 total hours of which 45 hours must be at the Jr/Sr (300+) level.

The same course cannot be used to fulfill more than one KU Core Goal. However, overlap of a KU Core course with a major or degree-specific requirement is allowed. Overlapping is recommended to allow more opportunities to explore other majors and/or minors.
