The minor in digital health prepares students for professional roles in digital health. Digital health professionals assist health care providers in leveraging tools like mobile apps, software, wearable technologies, and others to improve wellness and patient care; the focus is the application of these tools as well as how data and information yielded from them is of high quality, useful, and accessible. Throughout this 19-credit minor, students learn about health data and information management, health information technology, health care delivery and organizational structures, project management, and information security, among others.
The career preparation offered in this minor relates to the occupational classifications of Health Information Technologists and Medical Registrars, and Medical and Health Services Managers, as published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics at the U.S. Department of Labor.
This minor is available to current undergraduate students at the University of Kansas (all campuses) and is administered through the Department of Health Information Management (HIM) at KU Medical Center (KUMC). The ideal student for the minor in digital health has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Although any student can declare and successfully complete this minor, a student who has completed a course in information systems, information technology, data analytics, database management, etc., is particularly well-suited. KU Lawrence/Edwards students should utilize current KU processes to add the minor to their student record. KUMC undergraduate students who add the minor after beginning a program at the KUMC campus should contact the Department of HIM to add the minor to their student record. After the minor is active on your student record, you'll receive follow up communication from HIM with enrollment information by the end of the current term.
