Co-Major in Science Education

The STEMTeach KU Science program is an academic area that is collaboratively managed with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The STEMTeach KU program’s mission aligns and echoes that of the School of Education and Human Sciences. Our purpose is to prepare professional biology, chemistry, geology, or physics teachers who educate children and youth about both the nature and process of science and knowledge of the natural world. In addition, these teachers become model teachers and leaders in their professional communities, including the fields of science education and general education.

Candidates in the STEMTeach KU science co-major must complete the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts major that is designated by the content department, biology, chemistry, geology or physic, as the education component of the co-major. The goals and objectives for the STEMTeach KU Science Co-major support the mission, goals and objectives of the University of Kansas School of Education and Human Sciences conceptual framework, preparation of Educators as Leaders and the KSDE/CAEP professional and content area standards. After the successful completion of the 29 credit hours of the STEMTeach KU program, which is the co-major, candidates will be eligible to apply to obtain a secondary teaching license from the Kansas Department of Education in their respective content area.
